I was watching a classic “Seinfeld” the other night when it occurred to me how this famous bit could serve as an allegory for our relationship to AI:
“A parasite … it lifts my spirit … a loathsome, offensive brute, yet I can’t look away … (it) transcends time and space …(it) sickens me … I love it.”
Whether you love or loathe AI, you’ll likely be glad you’ve got AI guidance for your student newsrooms, classrooms or departments as Fall 2026 kicks into high gear.
I rounded up some guidelines to help. 🤖
Here is the AP with Standards around generative AI and SPJ’s The ethics of using AI.
For student newsrooms, I suggest:
- AI ethics guidelines | A starter kit for newsrooms (Poynter)
- AI Worksheet: Create an AI use policy (Trusting News)
- How to Develop AI Guidelines (Columbia Journalism Review)
Here’s what some professors and departments have put together:
- Policy for the Use of AI in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism (Ohio University)
- Departmental AI policy (The Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Maine)
- Creating a Generative AI Policy for Your Course (UCLA Teaching and Learning Center)
